Need the ability to add the same customers email address to multiple companies

I have a client that owns 2 companies but he only has 1 email address. Why can't I create a contact in each company with this single email address?

    Because we use email addresses as unique logins.

    What you can do instead of creating multiple contacts with the same email address is the following...

    Edit the existing contact, then mark the checkboxes under "companies" that they belong to. This will add them to all companies you select.
